AS I AM by Mitzi Starkweather: ELIJAH

ELIJAH - AS I AM

The AS I AM project started simmering in my heart nearly two years ago. As with most things it took time for my mind to catch up. When I approached Elijah as my first official subject they wholeheartedly said yes, and on Valentine’s Day we took portraits that literally made me cry and then get up and dance as I edited them. And it’s just black and white and cropping as far as editing goes - no retouching at all. That’s the point.

There’s a place for fancy hair and makeup and photoshop but there’s also a place for YOU, just as you are. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned after nearly ten years in business it’s that you are thoroughly and inherently valuable and the great journey and love story of life is getting to know and love YOU, to hold and behold your one magnificent self.

Here’s what Elijah said about AS I AM:

“I’ve been on a journey to extinguish the insecurities others have placed on me and to choose self-love and acceptance… I walked in the studio, put on an outfit that my heart picked out for me, sat down in front of the camera and simply… existed. Thanks to Mitzi and the safety and comfort she provided, what initially felt like a challenge quickly turned into the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I was able to quiet my thoughts and let my heart and soul bare themselves to a camera lens.

Seeing these images for the first time was one of the most healing experiences I’ve ever had. For the first time in my life I didn’t feel the need or desire to pick myself apart and search for flaws; I saw myself through a lens of love. The fact that I will forever be able to look back on these images and remember what my self-love looks like brings me an indescribable amount of joy. Thank you, Mitzi, for using your gift to celebrate others as they are.” -Elijah

Please reach out if you’d like to participate in AS I AM. You’ll get a booking link with he next round of session options this week.

This project is healing and igniting my soul and I’m thankful for everyone who plays a part in it.
